“The generous, continued support from the Mia Hamm Foundation has changed the trajectory of our Girls in Sports programming. When we started, Lawrence, Massachusetts like too many inner cities, did not support a youth soccer program, and its high school, despite a student body of 3,000, did not field a girls team. Fast forward 5 years, after our first Foundation grant, and our recreational leagues, summer camps and maxed out travel teams are benefiting 500 elementary, middle and high school girls, every season.

The Foundation’s sustained investment in our mission has not only fueled our growth but has allowed us to raise the achievement bar for our girls through other wraparound health, leadership and academic support, like fitness and nutrition programs, after-school tutoring, and junior coaching experiences, that have improved our impact. Today, a handful of players on our first girls team are playing varsity and intramural soccer in college, and many return over the summer months, like Oriagna pictured here, to work as Coach-Mentors, inspiring the next generation of young girls to follow in their footsteps. Thanks especially to Mia Hamm for her tireless efforts, on and off the field, to ensure that girls, including our Beyond Soccer players, like the Grade 6 Bulldogs “have every opportunity to compete and develop as boys." – Hall of Fame Induction speech (2007). “For eleven years, SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals has been opening our doors to patients, families, and caregivers who are being treated at UNC Hospitals. Even while the House was being built, the Mia Hamm Foundation stepped in to name a suite in support of bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients and their families. It’s not unusual for several of our suites to be occupied by BMT families, sometimes as many as 20 patients a year, with their housing expenses being supported by the Foundation.

Family House is in the process of adding 35 more rooms and we are pleased to welcome more BMT families who will understand Mia’s role in Family House when they see her jersey and the plaque in front of the suite she sponsored.”

“Thank you again to the Mia Hamm Foundation for supporting the Wyss family and Abella and Hudson’s Hope Fund at the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases. The Abella and Hudson’s Hope Fund provides funding for basic and translational research in neuro-oncology within the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases. This funding provides vital funds to support research and treatment of pediatric brain tumors.”
